The photos of this playful monotreme in the Macquarie River near the Ross Bridge were taken by a recent guest who heard splashing and rustling and upon closer inspection noticed it was not the duck or black swan that she expected but a platypus!
Platypus in Tasmania are not nocturnal so you have a much better of chance of seeing them here than you would in their natural habitat on the mainland of Australia.

The Macquarie River provides an abundance of wild ducks and black swans for the bird lover and children to feed as well as a platypus who is not shy to show itself for the nature lover. There are also trout and redfin in the river for those who would rather throw in a line.
